Today = AWESOME

EDIT: So this was too confusing without names. I added first names to hopefully make it easier to understand.

So, today was pretty average until I was driving home from work. After work, I got a couple of nice things, one of which most people won't actually think is all that exciting, but which I am really freaking psyched about. Anyway, first: weekend summary (which, despite being called a summary, is still pretty long).

I took off about half an hour early from work on Friday and drove to Grand Rapids to meet up with 5 friends. We went out to a sports bar for dinner and I got a really good burger, plus a free appetizer (courtesy of the two who organized it, Branden and Jess, who had a bunch of coupons). Then we went bowling, which was a lot of fun. I did my typical not-so-great in the first game, significantly-better in the second game thing and ended up a little over 140 in the second game, which I was happy with. After that, we went to Branden and Jess's apartment and played some Wii until it got late, then we drove to Holland and went to bed.
Saturday was basically trying to fit everyone I wanted to see into one day, which was... interesting. It started off with brunch with Angela (hash brown omelet apparently = hash browns on the outside with an omelet in the middle. VERY tasty), then some walking around Holland with stops at a couple of shops (the Peanut Store has a great bulk candy selection!) and grabbing a temporary parking pass from Campus Safety (apparently free now, which was nice). Then I went disc golfing (which IS in fact different from frisbee golf. Who knew?) with Becca and Mason which was a lot of fun. After that I visited a couple of friends (Brendan and Laura) still living in campus housing, which was neat since I hadn't seen them or the buildings in months. After that was hanging out with other friends (Ross and Steve and the guys they life with), one of which had a sibling visiting (Ross's brother, Adam) from out of town who I had met and gotten to be friends with last summer, all the while running about 15 minutes late. (Whee run-on sentence!) By now I think it was dinner time, so I met up with Becca and Mason (on whose pull-out couch I was spending the night) and we went out to a Chinese/Mexican/American all-you-can-eat buffet. It was pretty good, although it was a bit strange seeing orange chicken, lasagna, general tsao's chicken, and chicken burritos all (literally) right next to each other and not in a cafeteria. Anyway, after this I went back to Ross's apartment and there was apparently a music fraternity & birthday party going on, which involved basically no alcohol and instead an excess of cupcakes and candy. My kind of party! After this I called up Becca and Mason and it turns out they were watching a movie with some other people, one of which was my freshman-year roommate, so I went over, said hi, and watched the first two-thirds of Role Models before people decided it was bed time (which was much earlier than Friday night).
Sunday was basically just sleeping until 11, showering and packing up, saying bye, and driving back to East Lansing. Once I was here I proceeded to procrastinate on my homework and play some games, of course.

Anyway, today was basically just lab work all day. I made some progress and I know what I'm doing, but I'm getting a bit burned out in this lab. The rotation goes until the end of April, though, so hopefully I'll get a second wind pretty soon. For dinner I decided to get some take-out. The main reason was because... a Tim Hortons opened down the street! I haven't had Tim Hortons in a long time, so I got a bagel, some soup, tea, and the ten Timbits you see below for about $5.50. That makes me feel like I'm getting ripped off when I get lunch on campus. Oh well. It was really good and they have free Wi-Fi, so I might end up spending more time there. Probably not, because I can always get it to go and just use my pretty awesome internet at my apartment, but who knows.

Once I got home and had dinner I played some WoW. This was the highlight of my day, honestly. The first little bit wasn't all that exciting, just running around doing some quests, pretty normal stuff. Then I got a pretty freaking sweet piece of armor. (Feel free to skip to the last paragraph if you don't want to read about game stuff)

For those of you that don't play but are, for some reason, still reading, here's a short explanation. Normally to get this armor you have to beat the hardest bosses in the game (with 24 other people), get a token (which at least 2 other classes in the game also need, so you're probably fighting with at least 4 other people for it), and turn it in to get the armor. Or you can collect emblems (about 2 per boss I think) and turn in a bunch of them (about 30-40 I think) for the armor. As you can tell my numbers are really rough because I never really expect to be able to fight those battles, nor do I really want to, since they involve a lot of scheduling and, probably, more stress than it's worth.
Instead, once a week, I get in a group to fight one boss. You can fight the boss on two difficulty levels and you can do each difficulty level once a week. On the easier level he drops two random pieces of second-to-best armor, and on the harder level he drops 4 random pieces of best-in-the-game (at this point) armor. The armor is class specific, which means, since I was the only Warlock in the group when a Warlock piece of armor dropped, I automatically got it! And it was on the harder difficult, so it's some of the best in the game, unless I get into the really hard bosses, then there might be some slightly better stuff. I'm not really sure. Either way, this is the best possible stuff I can get with the effort I'm willing to put into it, so I'm more than happy.

Also, there's apparently a Facebook app based on Risk, so I'm playing a game of Risk with 4 other people and kind of dominating. That's basically a first for me, so that's pretty sweet too.

Links for the day

I'll have a longer post up later today, but for now, here are some links to articles about the benefits of video games.  It's kind of nice to see even non-educational games being shown to have at least some good effects.

Survey says...

This is a pretty neat short little article talking about women's responses to a survey by the Oxygen channel.  I imagine it'll be less informative for women than it will be for guys, but still pretty neat.

(Also, yay for the random game show titles!  Let's see if I can make more corny titles in the days to come...)

Uhhh...

Why the heck is it snowing? Who decided THAT was a good idea?

I'm on my way back to East Lansing after a fun but busy couple of days in Holland. Hope everyone's weekend is going great!

Saturday happenings.

Becca and Mason. Yup, good stuff.

The poorly-mannered bowling lane

Lane 29... in one of its few well-behaved moments.

Dinner time!

And the weekend of Hope begins. In Grand Rapids.

Woooooo!

Yeah I'm a dork, it's ok I know. =)

hmm whoops

Hmm I missed a day. Nothing really happened, though, just lab work and classes. I'm doing pretty well in classes (now that I know what I actually got on my recent tests), but other than that it's basically the same old, same old.

Oh God... so funny.

For anyone who know a bit of Warcraft lore, this is pretty much amazing:

Scourge Chat Log

And now, a subliminal word from our sponsors

So today was all right. Work was a little bit frustrating because I didn't QUITE get enough done, but hopefully that'll be ok. I was annoyed when I got in the car and then I turned on the radio and everything was better. The song "99 Red Balloons" was on the radio. In German. I think I really only know the song from SingStar (one of those karaoke console games), but it's in English on the game. At first I couldn't understand what they were singing but I recognized the music. Then I thought, "hmm this is that 99 Red Balloons song, isn't it? They did that in German, too, right?" I just now realized that I have no reason whatsoever for thinking that, other than the fact that some part of my brain must have realized it was German. Anyway, for those that don't know I took German from 7th grade until college and minored in it, so once I realized it was German and started understanding it I got a nice cheering up, as random things like that are wont to do.

Also, this is pretty cool. It's a little video about subliminal persuasion and it shows how the most random things can leave a mark that we didn't even register at the time.

An eclipse and some rotting fruit.

Procrastinating on homework! Woohoo! First I did a bunch of those random quizzes (the ones that are supposed to tell you all sorts of things about you, except they're written by random people, so they're really just sort of fun), this time on Facebook. Then I went to my sites-I-visit to get a link for this post, and now I'm actually making the post. At least it's before 11:30 this time! Maybe I'll get to bed at a decent hour tonight...

Link! <-- That goes to a page with Wired.com's top ten time-lapse movies. I'm not sure they all actually count as time-lapse, but I'm not really qualified to say that! My favorites are probably the lunar eclipse one, the snow storm one, the corn growing one, and the apple rotting one. I was actually more disturbed by the roots of the growing corn than I was by the rotting apple, and I really liked the apple one's video/audio combination. Anyway, g'night.

Hey look...

... another late night post. I should be sleeping by now, but oh well. Today I drove down to campus to read papers for a class. I thought I'd be able to access them from home, but apparently I couldn't. I stopped at Taco Bell on the way and got a quesadilla combo meal, which was pretty decent and cheaper than I remembered, which is always good. Then I got to campus and tried to get on the internet, with no luck. Of course. I remembered the lab that I did my second rotation in had a lab router, so I went up there and downloaded what I needed then headed home. On my way to my car I ran into someone else from my class who informed me that I could, apparently, access it from home, I just had to go through the MSU library's website. Of course, how could I be so stupid? (<-- sarcasm in case you couldn't tell)

Anyway I read one of the papers and got a bit of a start on the other, so I don't have much left to do on them tomorrow. Fun stuff.

Edit: haha this posts reads really strangely, probably because I'm half asleep in the chair writing it.

Almost forgot

So... I have about half an hour before I miss the update for today.

And now that I got sucked into the internet for 20 minutes I have a little under ten minutes. Nothing too new today. Made some pretty tasty teriyaki chicken tenders (just store-bought marinade+chicken) and I STILL have peanut butter cookie dough left, so I made up another dozen of those. I forgot that those recipes make about 5 dozen 1.5 inch cookies. Oh well, you can never have too many cookies, especially when the dough freezes so well.

Also, I TRIED to do homework, but apparently I can only access the files I need to read on the campus internet, so I'll have to drive down tomorrow. *grumble* It'll get me out of the apartment I guess.

And last, as my mom keeps reminding me, I haven't played Animal Crossing in weeks. My townspeople have probably all moved out and the plants are probably all dead by now. It'll be an adventure when I do pick it up again, though.

Some neat finds

First of all, happy Friday!  Second, a couple of links.

http://goingtorain.com/
This site finds where you are, checks the weather, and tells you if it's going to rain or not.

http://www.google.org/flutrends/
Google.org is apparently Google's place for telling you what they're learning by datamining the world.  Their flu trends thing is pretty cool -- it uses search terms to assess what the flu risk is before the CDC data is released.  It looks to be pretty accurate too, at least for finding trends.

Apparently there's a group of scientists working on doing a similar thing for evaluating climate change.  I guess they're going to webcrawl and look for observations from various sources to get a better idea of how the environment is changing.  I never really thought about it this way, but they say we're changing it faster than data collection can really keep up, so we need a somewhat accurate way of assessing what's happening.

This is also on Google.org, and I think it's a pretty great idea.  It's a power monitor project that would monitor your energy usage throughout the day so you know how much is being used and so you can see how much different appliances use.  Like they say on the site, you can't know what to change when you don't know the situation.

A bit of a plant geek

Apparently someone's wandering jew plant got into a fight and came out a little worse for the wear. I came across these plant bits on the path on the way to lunch and, from a distance, thought "hmm... it's basically impossible to kill those. If I grabbed one of those chunks and put it in dirt I could have my very own plant!" Then I got a bit closer and realized that all but one of the bits were very, very flat. Run over by a truck flat. Oh well. I would have had to raid the greenhouses for a pot and dirt anyway and the cat ate the last plants I tried growing. She's a little demoncat sometimes.

Minty fresh

Is it just me or is this green... mintier than I originally thought? I need to work on this blog design at some point. Don't be too confused if things move around or it just looks completely different some day.

Bat in space

Apparently a bat was holding on for dear life during the Discovery launch... It was either one of the first bats in space or it hopefully fell off before it got to the point where it could breathe and froze.

Truckers are awesome.

So there's something I've come to notice recently. Truckers are pretty much awesome.

Story one: This is a picture from my way into work today (excuse the black bar clipped off the top). The left lane was closed up ahead of where we were and every so often someone would fly past and cut in at the front. Then this truck (the round tanker truck in the picture) moved over to block both lanes and stop them from doing it. It was (to say it again) awesome.

Story two: on my to visit my brother a couple of weeks ago, there was an accident on the highway going the other way that was mostly blocking the road. The police were working to clear it up and they had to reroute people around the accident, so more cars coming down the road were kind of making a mess. I saw this, but then noticed the number of cars was decreasing quickly and it was a bit confusing... until I drove a but further and saw two trucks going about half the speed limit and slowing down both lanes going the other way. There was no way they could have seen the accident from where they were, so either trucks closer to the accident had radioed back or the police themselves had. Either way it was neat to see these trucks helping to control traffic and clean up the accident faster.

Watch dog... of sorts.

We have our very our watch cat in our apartment. She likes to stare as people walk by and she makes strange noises at birds. Also, I think she may jump through the screen on that one day when she gets a little too excited.

Ah! Forgot about St. Patty's Day!

So... yeah.  I went to all the trouble of digging through the internet for something interesting only to remember that it's St. freaking Patrick's Day AFTER I post.  Anywho, happy St. Patty's to those that care for it (I made the site a little greener for the occasion).  I COMPLETELY forgot about it until a friend texted me earlier and so I'm not wearing any green at all.  I DID however, make one of these yesterday:

It's taped to my wall in my room right now.  They're a bit complicated to make, but if you're used to origami, I'd recommend giving them a go.  (links to steps: 1 & 2)  They're by the wife of the guy that does Megatokyo if you know it.  Apparently she has a whole origami site.  Who knew?  I just noticed the other guy in the part of the lab that I work in isn't wearing green either.  Maybe I could just grab a plant from someone's research and tack it to my shirt.

That'd count, right?

Of peanuts and fish.

I was a little disappointed when I was looking around the internet at my normal places today.  There wasn't really anything all that interesting and nothing that seemed to warrant me linking it.  I ran across a short clip on cnn.com reporting something I came upon later on sciencenews.org and at first I thought that was the big news of the day for me.  The problem was that I'd already heard about allergies getting the hair of the dog treatment, so it wasn't a huge deal for me.  Then I stumbled across a "for kids" article on sciencenews.org.  Apparently when you want a pretty cool random science snippet you go to articles designed for kids.

Apparently there's a fish with a head that's mostly clear.  Yeah.  Weird.  Not only that, but its eyes are like looking through paper towel tubes, but it can move them around and look out different parts of its clear head, since they're basically embedded inside.  Very weird.  There's a little movie clip at the bottom of the article but it doesn't show the eyes moving... oh well.  Pretty cool anyway.  I guess this is yet another reason we should be figuring out what's in the ocean.

New professor

The second half of my eukaryotic genetics class (don't worry about knowing what that means) starts today and the the professor teaching it switched out. The last one was pretty hard to pay attention to (something about his voice made it hard to keep focused), so hopefully this one will be better. So far he's a pretty entertaining, just by his behavior and his manner of speech, and he seems to like his water bottle. I guess we'll see.

In other news: actual news! The space shuttle carrying a new solar arrays for the international space station finally launched today (it's been delayed for a number of reasons). This will make the station the second brightest body in the night sky, after the moon. Apparently this means Venus goes to number 3. I don't really keep up on these things, but it's pretty neat nonetheless.

Nothing new to report

Basically as the title says. Today was a beautiful day, weather-wise, but I didn't really do much. Got groceries, cleaned up a bit, and now I'm studying.

Yup.

EDIT: Something new to report! A LINK for all those people I know who've said "I wish they made adult footy pajamas." (is that footy or footie? Now neither one looks right.)

And on to Saturday

All right, the wikibooks peanut butter cookie recipe was saved by adding more peanut butter! Basically I'd say just go with the non-wiki recipe I posted and you'll have good cookies.

Apparently World of Warcraft is having issues in China because of their censorship. I guess they had to get rid of any bones/skeletons in the past games because the Chinese government said so... the only problem with doing that with the most recent expansion (for those of you not addicted to WoW) is that it's based on a campaign against the undead. Makes it hard to get rid of them, I guess. Oh well, apparently Chinese subscribers are going to Taiwan or something to get the new content.

Holy TGIF Batman

I am SO glad it's the weekend. The week as a whole wasn't particularly bad, but I'm really really tired and I don't know that I could have handled interacting with lab people for another day this week. No big plans this weekend, so hopefully I'll be able to convince myself to go to bed nice and early, work out on Saturday and Sunday, and do some more studying for my test on Monday. The test will probably be pretty easy, but I need to go over the material a bit more before I'm comfortable with it. Also, trying to learn three different programming languages at the same time is difficult.

Link: Peanut Butter Cookies! I had an idea that wikibooks existed... somewhere in the back of my mind. I didn't realize that they had cook books, or that said cook books would contain two recipes for peanut butter cookies, one without eggs! I'm not really sure why the idea of cookies without eggs is so appealing to me, but it might be because food minus eggs spoils slower? Ooh maybe I'll make a double batch and freeze most of it so I can have fresh cookies whenever I want. Yes I believe I'll do that.

Edit: Another peanut butter cookie recipe, this one from a family friend given to me by my mom:

Peanut Butter Cookies

1c shortening
2c peanut butter
1c brown sugar
1c white sugar
2 eggs
1tsp vanilla
2tsp baking soda
3c flour

Preheat to 375F. Cream shortening, peanut butter, and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Add dry ingredients and stir well. Form dough into balls, a little bigger than a walnut. Use a greased cookie sheet. Place 2 inches apart and press with a fork. Bake 12-15 minutes.

Edit #2: I made the cookies from the wiki cook book (the recipe with eggs). Not enough peanut butter. I only made up a dozen though and I have a bunch of dough left, so I think I'll add some more and some more flour to balance it. Hopefully that'll make them better. Right now they taste like bad peanut butter flavored shortbreads...

It's a ZAMBONI

Apparently they clean the floors of the atrium of the BPS building with a freaking zamboni.

(excuse the not so awesome pictures, I was trying to not be creepy =P)

Hahahaha

This is freaking awesome.

Second test

This is my new computer in its final place of residence in my room. The monitor is definitely big and I have to sit back a bit to not go blind from being too close.

(Also, this is the second mobile blog post test!)

Well that's... interesting

Apparently I can post to this from my cell phone... I'm not sure if it counts as a text or an email though. We'll see I guess.

First mobile post!

First mobile post!

Four in a row

All right, this is going good so far, maybe I'll be able to keep it up.

My head kind of hurts and I don't know what to do with myself. Today was a pretty good day, though, so that's kind of ok. The lab I'm rotating in is hosting a workshop and I went today and basically listened to talks all day. It was interesting, but it was pretty intense and I think that combined with a slight lack of sleep is why I have my headache. As to why I don't know what to do with myself... it's probably because I've been pouring my free time into WoW recently and now I don't feel like playing as much. Now I have free time and I don't remember what else I normally do with it. Maybe I'll work out... or maybe I'll make cookies. hmmm.

And now, my link for the day: Do you have Verizon cell phone? Click on that to find out how to opt out of them sharing all of your info!

Hmm

Not sure that I have much to talk about today. I renewed my lease on my apartment today for another year, so I guess I at least know where I'll be living. I have to call the insurance people and pay for another year of insurance at some point.

Also, podcast recommendation: Stuff You Should Know. It's by some guys from howstuffworks.com and it's a good combination of interesting and funny and it's never over your head, which is nice.

World Builder

So far I'm two for two!  Woohoo.  Today I bring you this:

The first part is pretty darn awesome.  The end is kind of sad, but I love the thought that technology like this is even remotely possible.

EDIT: Geez... I just looked at the side bar on the right and noticed the sad little (1) next to February.

Hi!

My brother told me I should update this more often. I have to say I agree. I'm going to try and post something EVERY DAY from now on. That mostly means more, smaller updates instead of relatively large ones at indeterminate points in time. Today's is going to be movie trailers!
